Jony Ive: Apple Watch does not threaten manufacturers of expensive watches

Apple Watch finally hit the market. Apple Chief Designer Jony Ive and employee Marc Newson recently answered a series of questions regarding the wearable during an interview at the Conde Nast International Luxury Conference in Florence.

When asked if Apple considers itself to be a competitor to traditional luxury watchmakers (a good question given the fact that Apple has released a gold-framed version and pays a lot of attention to sales in well-known jewelry stores), Mr. Ive responded somewhat evasively:

“We didn’t release Apple Watch because we thought we could bring a better-looking wristwatch to market, or because we wanted to compete with existing watchmakers. This was done because we thought the wrist was a great place for a technology device. That is, the motivation was different from the one that we had when working on the iPhone “.

Another important issue that was raised during the conversation was the limited time of relevance of the Apple Watch compared to mechanical devices, which can sometimes become heirlooms. Jony Ive, however, again evaded a direct answer:

“It is wrong to compare this beautiful mechanical wristwatch we have with a product with such advanced functionality and capabilities that will grow and change more than we can imagine.”.
