In a recent post on the Building Windows 8 blog, Microsoft highlighted two themes that fundamentally differentiate Metro UI apps from older Windows programs – installation and certification. The Metro app ecosystem is evolving in the same direction as Windows Phone, Android, iOS and OS X, moving away from classic free software in favor of a centralized store. As a result, the principles and techniques that developers deal with will change, and, most likely, will be significantly simplified.

The Windows Store environment will provide one-click installation, constant monitoring of crashes and collecting user feedback, and developers do not need to write a single line of installation code for this. When the app is installed, Windows monitors it and will offer a replacement install from the store if it detects any glitch.

Notably, Metro apps run in a computer-safe sandbox mode, and developers downloaded from the Windows Store must declare many types of features to use, such as the Google Play Authorization List. Examples of such requested permissions include access to various types of media libraries, the network, some areas of the user profile. By standard, apps do not have any of these, although a template for web access is built into the developer toolkit.

Windows 8 has a special SDK for Metro apps. However, it should be noted that developers cannot completely abandon working with the SDK and use unsupported APIs, since otherwise this would directly violate the rules of the Windows Store and lead to blocking or exclusion from the catalog. Moving beyond the closed Metro environment falls short of the high security expectations consumers are placing on a new type of app, according to Microsoft.
