SMIC is going to start production of 7nm chips next year, but these are “Chinese” 7nm

The Chinese company Innosilicon, known for custom-built LSIs for cryptocurrency mining, announced that it has completed the digital design of the first domestic chip using SMIC’s N + 1 process. According to SMIC Co-Director Liang Mong Song, the N + 1 process is “almost the same” as TSMC’s 7nm process. Thus, Innosilicon confirmed the readiness of the Chinese manufacturer to begin production of advanced chips.

The statement that SMIC’s N + 1 process technology allows the production of chips with characteristics close to those of 7nm TSMC production is rather arbitrary. Switching from TSMC’s 14nm FinFET to 7nm process adds up to 35% performance to transistors under ideal conditions. In the case of a transition from 14nm FinFET SMIC process technology to N + 1 process technology, the increase in transistor performance ideally reaches 20%.

SMIC N + 1 process technology is closer to TSMC 7nm process technology in terms of reducing consumption. According to the Chinese side, the transition from 14 nm to N + 1 will provide a decrease in consumption without a decrease in performance by up to 57%. Looks attractive, but the Chinese again clarify that production with the N + 1 process technology is more costly than the production of chips on 7nm TSMC lines.

This is a known issue and has no solution yet. As you may remember, the US has blocked the sale of EUV lithographic scanners to the Dutch ASML by SMIC. SMIC is forced to use 193nm scanners for 7nm production and more production steps, photomasks and raw materials than TSMC.

Nevertheless, today’s announcement by Innosilicon of the completion of a digital tape-out project for the N + 1 process can be considered a milestone. With this process technology, the performance of Chinese semiconductor products will definitely improve. However, SMIC will not start mass production of chips using the N + 1 process technology until the first quarter of the new year. Imperials are in no rush. There’s an eternity ahead.
