When it comes to autonomous transport, they primarily talk about cars, buses and trucks. But for cities like Amsterdam, waterways are a relevant way to move people and transport goods. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) recently tested a prototype Roboat II in Amsterdam.

Robotka “2 m long and weighing 50 kg for three hours moved along the canals of Amsterdam, after which it returned to the starting point with an error of only 0.17 m. Note that the tested prototype is half the size of the vehicle that is planned to be built as a result.

MIT has been working on this project with the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS) for the past five years. The first public demonstration of the prototype of the “robot boat” took place in October 20221. Roboat II – the second version of the autonomous boat, created within the project, which differs from the first version in a higher carrying capacity. Another important difference is that it can carry passengers.

The vessel is equipped with four propellers, lidar, GPS receiver and other sensors that allow it to move in any direction. It has an adjustable design for transporting both cargo and people (capacity – two people).

Roboat II uses an updated Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm. Once the task is set, the algorithm automatically schedules the boat’s movement based on factors such as weather and traffic.

Due to its modular design, the “robodka” can act as a leading vessel for a fleet of autonomous boats when transporting large volumes of cargo through the city’s canals. For communication between the leader boat and the driven boats, the researchers use the so-called “distributed control system”.

The next step is the construction of a larger, 4-meter version of the autonomous boat, capable of carrying 4-6 passengers. In addition to this, the research team wants to improve the detection and identification of objects in real time, so that more complex scenarios that may arise on urban waterways can be solved. In addition, she wants to create adaptive controls so that the internal structure of the boat changes depending on the load placed on it.
