Intel Xe-HP NEO graphics card with 512 compute units tested in Geekbench
Next year Intel is going to release two series of graphics cards based on the Xe Graphics architecture – Xe-HP (also known as Arctic Sound series) and Xe-HPG (known as DG2 series).
There is a fundamental difference between the two architectures. The Xe-HP series is aimed at data centers and will be available in at least three variants with one die (512 Compute Units, EU), two (1024 EU) and four (2048 EU). This GPU family is expected to also use HBM2 memory. In turn, Xe-HPG GPUs will target gaming systems and use a different memory technology (GDDR6).
While there are 512 EU block variants in both architectures, a new leak from Geekbench clearly points to the Xe-HP variant (Gen12HP):
In fact, this is not the first time we have seen the name NEO Graphics. Intel already used it during the Intel Architecture Day 2021 event: the name Neo appeared when demonstrating the pure performance of the accelerator in FP32 tasks, only then it was named XeHP HD instead of Gen12HP:
Geekbench results give us information about the core frequency: if during its event Intel demonstrated samples operating at 1.3 GHz, then a new leak shows a device with a clock frequency of 1.15 GHz.
Compared to today’s slowest NVIDIA Ampere graphics card – the GeForce RTX 3070 – the Xe-HP with 512 EU doesn’t seem particularly competitive. In most benchmarks the RTX 3070 is at least several times faster than Intel graphics, but this could be due to a lack of optimizations for this benchmark suite.
Intel Xe-HP 512 EU (4096 shader units) vs NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (5888 CUDA cores)
Recall that the leak revealed the simplest of the future discrete Intel Xe-HP accelerators, built on a single crystal, as shown on the official slide:
