A prototype of the most sensitive video camera in the world has been created in Russia
For about fifteen years, Russia has been producing single-pixel counters for single infrared photons of its own design. These solutions pave the way for quantum communication and quantum computers. And if a matrix of hundreds or thousands of pixels is assembled from such sensors, it will become possible for ultrasensitive infrared video recording and a host of new applications in medicine, science, security and more. In Russia, such a matrix was made.

The prototype of a supersensitive infrared video camera is based on the development of the Russian physicist Grigory Goltsman on the basis of the NITU “Quantum Communications” Center of NITU “MISiS”. In the early 2000s, Holtzman proposed a single-pixel single infrared photon counter and set up Skontel to commercialize the development. Skontel sensors are successfully used in experimental Russian equipment for organizing the distribution of quantum keys in secure communications. But now the scientist and his colleagues have gone further – they intend to create a video camera with an ultrasensitive matrix of 1000 pixels.
Such a camera, if made, will allow not only to see in almost complete darkness, but even to “look” through rocks and the human body, showing, respectively, the location of minerals and cancerous tumors. Also, arrays of ultrasensitive pixels will help advance in the creation of quantum computers and quantum communication systems.
The prototype presented today by the MISIS development team consists of only eight pixels. At the next stage, the scientists plan to create a 1000-pixel matrix, the principle of organization and management of which they are just running on an eight-pixel prototype. But even at the prototype stage, the researchers report, there are no analogues of this development in the world today.
To obtain images from the camera with a higher resolution than the matrix allows, scientists are going to use an interesting method of fixing photons. For this, the matrix will be sequentially covered with different patterns, and the resulting image will be obtained after summing all the patterns. Thus, a 1000-pixel matrix can display a picture consisting of a million pixels, and it will take quite a bit of time. This is especially important for medical devices that help diagnose cancer.
