Over 1000 kg of cosmic dust falls to Earth every day. In fact, this is an innumerable number of small meteors – remnants lost by asteroids and comets on the path of our planet or in the zone of its strong attraction. These objects falling from the sky can be recorded either with an optical telescope or with a radar, but until now the quantitative assessment of micrometeors was only available through visual observation, and this greatly limited the tracking coverage.

Radars allow you to monitor vast areas of the sky, but with such an observation it was impossible to estimate the weight of a celestial body. Its size and weight can only be estimated with an ordinary telescope by the brightness of the combustion of a micrometeorite in the atmosphere. Scientists from Japan did not want to put up with this and decided to adapt radars to accurately determine the weight of micrometeorites. To do this, it was decided to temporarily combine the observation of the same area of ​​the sky with the optical telescope of the Kiso Observatory on Mount Ontake, Nagano Prefecture, and the radar for studying the middle and upper layers of the atmosphere in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture.

The telescope and radar are 173 km away, but this did not interfere with observation due to the wide coverage of the sky by the radar. Observations were carried out in 2021, 2021 and 20221. In total, 228 meteors were recorded together, which made it possible to calibrate the radar to determine the weight of the meteors from radio tags. In the future, the radar can independently record the entry into the atmosphere of cosmic dust and maintain a corresponding database. But scientists don’t stop there. A new project will be the development of algorithms for recognition of the composition of meteorites by radars.
