Towards living shells for spaceships: MIT’s smart fabric will spend a year in Earth orbit in outer space
Earlier this month, samples of smart tissues were sent to the ISS with another cargo, which will spend one year in outer space. The experiment is being conducted by a group of scientists at MIT that plans to develop sensitive fabric with sensors for a host of applications in space, from spacesuits to spacecraft shells. We all remember the recent epic with the search for air leaks on the ISS. If the outer casing of the station carried the required range of sensors, the leak would be detected instantly and accurately. And it may seem strange, but the issue of studying micrometeorite impacts on spacecraft in the entire history of cosmonautics has not been specially dealt with.
Samples of the sent fabric do not contain active electronic circuits. Such fabric will go into orbit in future experiments. But even with passive sensors, the fabric is able to localize the impact of cosmic dust. However, at the first stage of testing, scientists will only study the resistance of tissue to the space environment in low Earth orbit: to atomic oxygen, as the most aggressive form of this oxidizer, to ultraviolet radiation and other influences. The goal is to identify the most space-resistant fabric materials.
In the future, scientists expect to create “smart” materials that will be able to transmit a mass of information about all parts of the spacecraft and bodies of astronauts, when the fabric becomes the basis of spacesuits; accumulate and generate energy; serve as sensors of tactile sensitivity for astronauts in spacesuits and do much more. After all, spacecraft hulls could be tools for space exploration. Such huge areas are idle! This needs to be fixed, MIT is confident, and they have started.
