Until recently, the partners reported that during a closed experiment with the support of the American telecom operator US Cellular, they managed to establish a communication channel for transmitting a 5G signal in the millimeter wave range over a distance of over 5 km. Qualcomm announced a new result today.
A new experiment by Qualcomm and Ericsson was carried out with the participation of the Italian mobile operator TIM in the Roman commune of Oriolo Romano. In its course, it was possible to establish a 5G communication channel between the base station and a CPE device (Customer Premises Equipment or telecommunications equipment installed on the client’s side), located 6.5 km from the antenna module. According to Ookla, the data transfer rate during the test reached 700 Mbit / s, and according to the UDP protocol – 1 Gbit / s.
It is important to note that the experiment was carried out in the field, and not in a closed laboratory – it used the existing 5G network of an Italian mobile operator. The test used a Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 modem, on the basis of which the aforementioned CPE AurusAI by Casa Systems, designed for operation in fifth generation networks, an antenna module QTM527 and an Ericsson Air 5322 transceiver were built.
The new record lends weight to Qualcomm’s early claims that FWA-based millimeter-wave data transmission could be considered an alternative to wired broadband access. In the near future, the Italian operator TIM and Ericsson plan to apply the latest developments achieved during the experiment in those regions of Italy where it is not possible to provide regular wired broadband Internet access.
